The Sanford Museum and Planetarium
The Sanford Museum and Planetarium in Cherokee opened a new exhibit on February 15th that will run through the summer of 2021: “People of the Northwest Coast and Arctic.”
The artifacts on display have origins in 12 different indigenous tribes from that region and include items like spoons, baskets, rattles, and more.
The Curator of Archaeology, Quinn Black, came across these items in museum storage. Many of them had last been displayed in 1968, so Black decided to create this exhibit. He carefully researched the artifacts, comparing each one with collections held by other museums. New signage was created, detailing information about each item such as its origin, age, and purpose. Community interest in the collection was sparked by Black’s Coffee with the Curators in November featuring a frontlet mask.
