The Ravalli County Museum is installing three permanent outdoor exhibits, the last high-energy efforts of Executive Director Tamar Stanley before her retirement.

“We know that is a trend now in the world, to social distance and also being outside is just plain good for people,” Stanley said Thursday. “We want to use our grounds in a more public-friendly and adaptive use of space.”

She said the museum board looked strategically at ways to enhance the museum and mirror some of the indoor exhibits for better patron experiences. The efforts include a tri-panel display of the Nez Perce, a secret garden showing the Gardens of the World and a public garden for showing local, juried art sculptures.

The permanent outdoor exhibit about the Living Culture of the Nez Perce will continue to tell the story of their flight of 1877 and is part of the Valley of the Three trails initiative. The three panels of beautiful images provide great detail of what it was like to live in the Bitterroot Valley then, and the reaction to the flight of the Nez Perce by tribal members, elders and council.
